About Us
The Pembroke Volunteer Fire Department was born from necessity and resilience following a devastating fire that swept through multiple businesses in our town. At that time, Pembroke was without its own fire department, and the Pearisburg Fire Department had to respond from several miles away. By the time they arrived, the flames had already taken hold, and the damage was extensive. This tragedy underscored the urgent need for a local fire service that could respond swiftly and protect our community.
On February 8th, 1948, with the memory of this disaster fresh in mind, community members gathered in the agricultural building at Pembroke High School, sponsored by American Legion Post #311. That night marked the founding of the Pembroke Volunteer Fire Department, a dedicated force created to prevent such devastation from striking our town again.
Starting from humble beginnings, our department quickly focused on securing essential firefighting equipment. With the support of the Pearisburg Fire Department, our members received training and equipment to build a robust and prepared team. This cooperation and guidance from Pearisburg were instrumental in helping us lay the groundwork for what would become a steadfast service to our community.
Through the years, the Pembroke Volunteer Fire Department has remained committed to these roots. We’ve expanded our capacity and expertise, responding to calls throughout the county to aid those in need, regardless of distance. Our dedication is reflected in our motto, “Dedicated to Those We Serve,” a principle we uphold with pride and purpose in every call and every action.
Today, we continue to honor the spirit of that initial meeting in 1948, remembering the people and circumstances that inspired our founding. The Pembroke Volunteer Fire Department stands as a symbol of resilience, service, and community—a department committed to protecting our town and supporting our county whenever and wherever we are needed.
